M. Shahid Alam: The Muslims America Loves

Salaam 'Alaikum

Found via Yursil, via PMUNA Debate.

The Muslims America Loves
On March 11 the New York Times published a front page story on Dr. Wafa Sultan, "a largely unknown Syrian-American psychiatrist, nursing a deep anger and despair about her fellow Muslims." Deep anger and despair at fellow Muslims? Are these the new qualifications for Muslims to gain visibility in America's most prestigious newspaper?

If the only Muslims that the United States can recruit in its battle for ideas are at best mediocrities or worse--nobodies--what chance is there that it can win the battle for Muslim hearts and minds? The short answer is: very little. Muslims are not helpless children. You cannot molest them and then expect to mollify them with trifles and protestations of pure intentions. That may have worked for a while. It will not work for ever.

she was on al-jazeera once...her words are pure venom, she is a malicious thinking snake, and believe me after the insults she said about the muslim - I guarantee you that it is the last time she will step into any muslim land ;)

I have read the March 11 Article, and my opinion is...so what? There is more truth than untruth there, and her choice to not practice Islam any further and to be in her words, "a secular human being", is her right. She is welcomed to visit me in my country any time she wishes. For me, any Muslims who expresses the desire to leave the faith, in medical terms, are making an uninformed decision. Had she knew the Prophet, as I hope to God I do, she would not leave His ways. But for her any many, many other Muslims who have converted, the sad and bad news is that the Prophet and His ways are not reflected any further in His Ummah. Many have converted, for reasons, while deeply personal, arose from the socio-economic-political circumstances of their lives. There is nothing spiritual in their conversions. It is more for us so-called inheritors of the faith of the Prophet to ask ourselves, where have we gone wrong? What could we have done better? The mere condemnation of this women serves no one. It merely exposes the fragile and insecure faith of many so-called practising Muslims. You may say that I am unduly harsh in my criticisms of my brothers and sisters. But I only do this because, by God, we can be so much better!

Yellow Mellow,

I find your words to be a very accurate observation and cogent critique of those who are quick to criticize critics in general, whether they be "proggies", "reformists", or even "moderates". Rather than come up with cogent counter arguments that are a sign of willingness to engage in a respectful, congenial debate, I see a slurried mass of logical fallacies; ad hominem attacks peppered with appeals to tradition and all the while, ignoring the obvious. There seem to me many who jump up to take offense and take aim at critics, rather than address the issues raised. ُُُ
It's not to say that the contributors to this blog don't have some points- but how they are phrased, and the way the arguments or framed are poor at best- and they should know by now that one's tone makes all the difference in how a persuasive their argument will be.

There seem to me very few among those who espouse traditional "Orthodox", "Fundamentalist", "Salafi", or "Wahhabi" modes of Islam who are willing to acknowledge the problems that exist within their communities, and instead wish to sweep everything under the carpet, and attack any messenger who dares mention that there's any dirt under the prayer rug. The fact that many muslims are in denial of these problems is, pretty undeniable. This is not a hasty generalization, but indicated by the reactionary, defensive, apologist tone adopted by many who seek to "defend" Islam from those who "dare" suggest anythign to the contrary.

Furthermore, many (though not all) such advocates often adhere to predictably conventional notions of what is "correct" versus "incorrect" interpretations of Islam that have been debated for centuries. It's as though some don't ever want to even acknowledge that such debates occurred in the past, and as such wish to ignore if not denigrate their existence at the present time. So what if there are gay muslims, liberal muslims, reformist muslims, shia muslims, mu'tazili muslims, etc etc? one person's religious barometer is not absolute. Serving up defensive reactionary caustic rhetoric does pathetically little to educate anyone about the nuances of these issues.

I wish that the contributors would spend a little bit more time EDUCATING people about their point of view, and how it is grounded in textual sources, and how others diverge- and done in a respectful tone, rather than peppered with diatribes. If they did that, they might actually do more to PERSUADE readers rather than sheepishly preach to the converted. Religious absolutism does not make a valid argument in and of itself. The very fact that the contributors think that is an acceptable mode at all is indicative that there is a very real problem. You can disagree with people, but it is possible to do so with IHTIRAM (respect) ADAB (courtesy), and above all IHSAN (kindness) without resorting to the meaner, baser traits of the human ego (Nafs-i Ammarah).

Wafa Sultan is a hero and very brave!
Steve Emerson is a hero!
..
The more people that discuss the truths of Islam and Islamic Jihad, the more the Jihadis
will be put in their place. The rule of law must apply, the US isn't letting Muslim gangs run around raping schoolgirls.

If they ever try that stuff over here, I'm sure the cops will crack down hard.
This is what is happening less and less in Europe. And that is just like spoiling little kids rotten.
If the law continues not to clamp down and enforce law regarding violence it will just get worse and worse.

Wafa Sultan and Robert Spencer are heroes! Islam as practiced by the Islamofascists will never be peace because if
Earth ever became ruled by Sharia Law all the multitudes of Islamic factions that hate each other would keep fighting each other forever.
