National Open Mosque Day in the UK!

Salaam alaikum,

Allah ta'ala knew that this idea was kinda floating around in my mind. Lo and behold, I get an e-mail from a friend telling me about National Open Mosque Day in the United Kingdom. It's a wonderful opportunity to get the community involved in dawah and education.

We Americans really need to steal this great idea from our British Muslimeen. I wonder if Canada has a similar event? But we can really promote this idea in the States. Many people are very curious about our masajid. They want to know what Islam is all about. The reason why people are so suspicious of us is because we haven't invited them into our places of worship to see that Islam is a living faith of normal people who want to please Allah ta'ala.

Any takers? Any Brits who read this entry, could you pop a small report into the comments area and tell us what it was like on Open Mosque Day?

Here's a little info...

I know various individual mosques, including the local Kingston one (yes, there is only one), have Open Houses. And our University musallah is, ideally, always ppen house. But it's a good idea to make it national.
However, I think there'd be some resistance to the idea on the basis that it's too "Westernised." I think it's the phrase "Open House" that puts people like my parents on gaurd. The fear is that it's going to be a day where the mosque is free for trampling by the overly inquisitive and secretly quaking. I don't think I explain myself well enough, but it'd take too long to go into the nuances of racialised fear.
Perhaps a more "Muslim-friendly" term might be helpful.
Another idea I like, and that I've seen happen occasionally, is the use of mosques as polling stations during elections. It helps when the mosques have a non-praying section.

Assalaamu Alaykum.
I don't think we've gone as far as the National Open Mosque Day, but we do it Ontario-wide. I'm not sure what day it is though. Considering the province of Ontario is probably about 5 times bigger than UK, I think that's a substantial achievement;-)
I'm kidding. I wish we were able to do something like that.
