The Hacking of MWU: Internet Prank or Publicity Stunt

There has been some speculation in many different corners of the web as to whether or not Muslim Wake was legitimately hacked into by a group of Muslim hackers. As of this moment, we don’t know if the culprits were Muslims or non-Muslims. Hackers aren’t known for revealing their true identities so every theory put forth is just that—a theory. Some people think that it was a publicity stunt perpetrated by MWU to gain more press from the Canadian and American media.

Whoever did the deed, The MWU crew being the media-savvy people that they are, will find a way to promote themselves from it. The “Islamic Challenge Brigade” will be painted as tyrannical internet jihadists attacking the inclusive, tolerant Progressive Muslims who just want to make the world a better place. I can see the future interviews where they discuss their terrible ordeal when their main hub was shut down and the world was left in the dark without the voice of “Islamic Reform”—at least for a few days. As Dr. M has stated before, we know that they claim to be the most popular Muslim magazine even though Islamicity is clearly the winner according to the stats, alhamdulillah. And to claim to be the voice of the silent Muslim majority is not accurate when you ban people from posting on your website when their views don’t quite mesh with yours.

As they have stated, they will not stop. They have too many interviews lined up with Chrisitan Science Monitor and the Toronto Star. The “Sex and the Umma” column will push whatever boundaries are left to push, though I doubt there are any boundaries left. They have already labeled Imam Siraj Wahhaj a f#gg*t so they are not above resorting to immature tactics and name-calling. (Am I the only one who thinks it’s funny that none of these insults are directed at the very people they offend? Why on the internet and not face to face? Is it normal for a white Muslim to call a Black Muslim imam a f%gg*t? I’m just not feeling that interracial brotherhood.) We know sooner or later they will call us folks at Living Tradition some horrible sexual or religious slur. They might be progressive but one thing’s clear—they are not interested in progressing towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

Excellent points. MWU's resident prankster claimed to have smeared faeces on Siraj Wahaj a couple of ISNAs ago, among other childish and stupid escapdes. He was also going around impersonating Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR which landed him in trouble. My point ? Its not outside the realm of possibility that the MWU hack was a false flag operation, given the lack of maturity of these clowns.

What is up with the constant CAIR bashing? And why is he impersonating Ibrahim Hooper? It's so stupid to pick on a group that is actually trying to fight all this Islamophobia. CAIR is actually taking care of real issues like Muslims being attacked and having our masajid burned down all over N. America. What exactly are THEY doing?

I think you should read their comments section regarding the hack, theres a bunch of anti-wahhabi nonsense going as far as calling for sanctions on the Saudis. Yeah, that'll stop the attacks. These people refuse to grow up dont they ?

Good point about MWU using this stunt for their own PR advantage. I thought it was funny at first, but now I'm realzing that its going to work against us; very sad.

What exactly are THEY doing? And bear in mind, attacking CAIR and every other major Islamic advocacy group in the USA is a hallmark of the Pipes-Spencer cabal. Which really says a lot about these people, that they will join the enemies of the Muslims to attack the Muslims.

I don't think the song has anything to do with race, though. Dumb, yes, but not racist. Am I missing something here-- the singer isn't white...

On a side note-- yep, it too passed through my mind that it could be a PR thing. However without any evidence to the contrary-- I won't speculate...

And yes, they will get publicity. I don't much care, either. Some of their stuff I really like, and some of it bugs the hell out of me.

However, MWU and the PMUNA isn't the representatives for the prog movement. Being on a progressive email list has shown me just how varied they are-- so relegating them into a convenient cubbyhole wouldn't quite be fair either.

Side note- I've written stuff on both MWU as well as have been critical of the site. I also have had the honor of being invited to Ihsan, which fulfills something I saw lacking within the MWU context...

Salaam 'Alaikum: Re: the race thing: The person on MWU who has consistently demonstrated an almost obsessive issue with Imam Siraj Wahaj is White. But other than that, I don't think the fact that the "singers" of that "song" aren't White doesn't mean they can't have issues with strong Black men, either. I can't be the only person who's noticed the almost complete and total absence of Black Muslims from the "Progressive" Muslim movement as a whole, can I? I personally think a lot about so-called "Progressive" Islam is tied up in class, status, nationalism, ethnicity, and race.

Salaam alaikum Leila M and everyone,
Unfortunately, though there are many views and strains to the Progressive Muslim Movement, has made itself THE voice of progressive Muslims. I am sure you have experienced how they ban people from their website who don't agree with their views. We are quite aware that many well-known Progressive Muslims like Farid Esack have criticized them for their clamoring in the media and the invitation of neocons to their board. I think that the movement has been hijacked but maybe the Ihsan blog will offer a better alternative to the porn-soaked, immature rantings of They did have some good writings in the beginning but now the website is light years away from it had been.

Salaamun Alaikum
I'm still reluctant to say it stemmed from racism. I think the kominas are on the islamic feminista blog-- you could ask them why they chose Wahhaj and not another if you believe it was racially motivated.

As for the lack of African Americans on MWU, you won't find any arguement for me there. I don't think it stems from an excusion per se, but the lack of interest on both says a hell of a lot. No denial whatsoever, there, and it's also a major criticism of my own.

Yes, I've many of the same problems with MWU as the Living Tradition blog has. One of my biggest problems with MWU has been the tendancy to react poorly to criticism, and all I can do is hope they change that. I won't be asking for a membership card to the PMUNA, but I still read MWU for some of its better qualities.

I hope Ihsan does well, too! I've found more of a spiritual infusion there than at MWU, and hope the blog continues for a long time, in sha Allah.

I saw MUslimWakeUp a few months after i converted and i wasn't very impressed. The Sex and the Ummah thing was interesting, until i read on and realized taht it was in fact soft porn. Yes women are sexual beings, yes some guys are jerks blah blah blah. From what i've seen though and waht i've heard i'm just disgusted by it. Calling anyone any "f" word (except for maybe fundamentalist which to some is a complement and not such a bad thing in my eyes, if fundamentalist means following Quran and Sunnah) is an insult and against Islam. I really like the postings, but maybe you guys could do some stuff that isn't centred around muslim wake, that article about the "truly proggressive mosque" was good, they all are. MashAllah!

Excellent points. Living Tradition is truly a most noble venture in exterminating the rabid misconceptions around us in the Internet today. Kudos to the founders and contributors. Thanks for exposing the racism and hypocrisy of the Hypocrites.

'And that He might know the hypocrites, unto whom it was said: Come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend yourselves. They answered: If we knew aught of fighting we would follow you. On that day they were nearer disbelief than faith. They utter with their mouths a thing which is not in their hearts. Allah is Best Aware of what they hide. ' al-Quran 3:167

I think you guys are doing a great job of exposing Muslim Wake Up. Look at what Mr. Naasef (aka my critics are neo-salaafis) is upto now. He appeared on the FOX channel, I heard he said something like US masjids and muslim institutions are full of extremists. The FOX audience loved him because of that.

You should continue with this site exposing Muslim Wake UP - if you want to you can start another site with other kinds of articles.

Ahmed Naasef's most recent comments about how masjids in the US are being run by extremists (that Fox viewers will no doubt take as meaning "terrorists") is very dangerous.

You Living Tradition folks and others need to begin to take a much more proactive stand against the PMU.

The stunts being pulled by Naasef and his PMU is putting the Muslim community in the United States in danger. Zaytuna, CAIR, ISNA and other Muslim groups should not just stand by while the PMU crowd insults and denigrates Muslims ala Daniel Pipes - and do the work of the Rand corporation.

Is Harvard University funding this organization? If so - you need to get in touch with Harvard - and let them know what is going on - and get them to defund this project of theirs! I will look for more comments on my recommendation here.

Hi there!

Vocalist from the Kominas here. That attack on Siraj Wahaj is simply because of his comments about Burning down a gay-friendly Mosque. Anyone who would go out of his way to burn down a house of Allah simply because of a few Gays has some repressed issues. Endorsing terror will never get you anywhere.

It is retarded to imply that Mike Knight is racist. Look at all of his writing on the Five Percenters.

Our other track, Par Desi, can be found here

That's less political/"fun" and more of an artistic track.

We deplore upper class, elitist South Asians as much as homophobic Imams. There is no racism in our music!

IMHO, anyone who mixes homosexuality and Islam is the one with repressed issues, if not blatant ignorance. I'll be blunt, you hacks arent fit to kiss the dust of Wahhaj's feet.
